This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use CrosswordCheats.com, why we collect it, and what rights you have over it.

Information We Collect

If you create an account, we collect:

  • The username you choose
  • Your email address
  • Your password — this is never stored in plain text. We store it as a salted hash, so we can't see or recover your actual password

We don't take any payments on this site, so we don't collect or store any payment card details.

We also automatically collect some technical and usage data via cookies, covered below.

How We Use Your Information

  • To create and manage your account, and let you log in (including the optional "remember me" feature)
  • To save your crossword-solving and training progress against your account
  • To email you about your account when necessary (e.g. password resets)
  • To understand how the site is used, so we can maintain and improve it
  • To show adverts that help fund the site

We won't give your email address to anyone else, and we don't sell your personal data.

Cookies

Cookies are small files stored in your browser. We use three kinds:

Essential Cookies

These are required for the site to work and can't be switched off:

  • Session cookie — keeps you logged in as you move around the site while your browser is open
  • "Remember me" cookie — if you tick "remember me" when logging in, this keeps you signed in on future visits, for up to about a year

Analytics Cookies

We use these to understand how visitors use the site, so we can improve it. If you're logged in, these tools are told your account ID, but not your username or email address. We use:

  • Google Analytics — provided by Google. See Google's Privacy Policy
  • Matomo — a self-hosted analytics tool running on our own server, so this usage data isn't shared with a third party

Advertising Cookies

Adverts on this site are served by Google AdSense, which may set cookies to show ads and measure their performance, including personalised ads based on your browsing. Sharing Your Information

We only share personal data with the third-party services described above (Google, for analytics and advertising), to the extent needed for them to provide those services. We don't sell or otherwise share your data with anyone else.

How Long We Keep Your Data

We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. If you'd like your account and associated data deleted, email us at hi@crosswordcheats.com and we'll action this promptly.

Your Rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Ask what personal data we hold about you, and get a copy of it
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate data
  • Ask us to delete your data
  • Object to, or ask us to restrict, how we use your data
  • Ask for your data in a portable format

Children's Privacy

CrosswordCheats.com is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.
